Moodle 4.0: Using the Calendar

In this article we will go over how to use the calendar in Moodle 4.0. The calendar is a great way to keep yourself organized and also to keep track of upcoming events and assignments. When you assign a due date to a Moodle activity, it will automatically be added to your calendar.

For a detailed tutorial on how to use the calendar in Moodle, check out the following YouTube video:

The calendar is located in your Dashboard which is located on the site heading bar at the top.

Once you scroll down, you will see the calendar. If you give an assignment on Moodle that has a due date associated with it, it will automatically show up on your calendar. An example of this is the event that is on June 8th. A great feature of the calendar is if you decide to move the date of an automatically added calendar event by dragging it to a new date, Moodle will automatically update the due date in the assignment itself so you do not have to change it in two places.

You can manually create events as well that are strictly for the user or for events that will be shared with a course.

To manually create an event, click the New Event button in the upper right corner of your calendar, or simply click inside of the date that you want your event to appear.

If you are creating an event that is intended for your own personal use, this would be classified as a User Event. These events will not be seen by students.

Enter in the name of your event. The date and time that is chosen is the date chosen on the calendar and the time that you chose to select it. You can always change the time. Keep in mind that Moodle operates on Army Time. Press Save.

The event will now appear on your calendar accompanied by a blue dot indicating that it is a user event. If you want to move this event to another date on the calendar, simply drag and drop it into the date you are looking to change it to.

You can also manually create events that are shared with your course calendars. This is called a Course Event. To create a course event, you would follow the same instructions as stated above, except instead of choosing User from the Type of Event menu, choose Course. Another box will pop up below asking you which course this event should be added to. If you don't see it automatically populate, type the short name of your course to see if it comes up.  Press Save.

The event will now appear on your calendar accompanied by a orange dot indicating that it is a course event. If you want to move this event to another date on the calendar, simply drag and drop it into the date you are looking to change it to.

To delete an event, simply click the event on the calendar and from the box that pops up, choose Delete
