Moodle 4.0: Setting up Attendance

This article will walk you through how to set up attendance on your Moodle page using the Attendance feature. To see a detailed tutorial video on how to accomplish this task, please check out the video below:

For step by step written instructions, continue scrolling through this article.

1. Turn Editing Mode on.

2. Navigate to the week where you would like Attendance to appear. A good place to for you to put it would be in the General section at the very top of the page. Press Add an Activity or Resource.

3. Select Attendance.

4. Once the page opens, you will be asked to give the activity a name. You can write whatever you like, but Attendance would suffice here. The only other thing that you requires your attention here is the Grade section. Here you can choose if you want attendance to count towards a grade or not, and you can also place it into its corresponding category if you have set that up in your Grade Book.

5. Once you are finished here, click Save and Return to Course.

6. Now that you have created the Attendance module, it is time to set its specific parameters as they pertain to your class. Find where you saved the activity on the main page, and click into it.

7. Select Add Session

8. In the Add Session section, add the information for the first day that your course is taking place. This includes the date and the time. Please keep in mind that the time is set to army time.

9. Once you have added that information in, expand the Multiple Sessions section. In here, you will need to set the parameters for the rest of your sessions for this course, including how often the course happens, the days of the week that it takes place, and when it ends. Since our course happens more than once, first click Repeat the session above as follows. Then select what days of the week your course happens, and select a date for when the course ends.

10. Click Add at the bottom of the screen.

11. Your sessions should now be created. In order to take attendance, click the play button next to the session corresponding to that day.

12. Click the radio button to the right of each student's name according to their status for that day. P stands for Present, L stands for Late, E stands for Excused, A stands for Absent. If everyone has the same status, you can select all the student names at once, by selecting All from the Set Status For drop down menu and clicking the one that corresponds to the students.
