Changing a Course Format on Moodle

There are two main formats that are used most when organizing a Moodle page.

Weekly Format

By default, a Moodle course is set up using a weekly format with the starting date based on the date of the first day of class. See below:

As you can see, the course is separated by weeks. You can now add information as it pertains to that week.

Topics Format

The other commonly used format is Topics Format. This is a good format to use if you would rather separate your course based on individual topics that you're teaching.  To change your course from weekly format to topics format follow these instructions:

  1. Navigate up to the gear in the upper right hand corner and click it. Choose Edit settings.

2. Scroll down until you see Course Format. Expand this section and from the Format menu, choose Topics Format

3. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and press Save Changes.

Adding or Removing Weeks/Topics

Too many or too few weeks/topics? Follow these instructions to add or remove some from your Moodle page:

  1. Turn your editing button on. The editing button is located in the upper right hand corner under the gear menu.
  2. Scroll all the way down to the last week/topic on your page. To add additional weeks/topics, click Add Weeks or Add Topics

  1.  Choose the number you want to add and press Add Weeks or Add Topics

To remove weeks/ topics, make sure your editing button is on. Go to the week/topic that you want to remove. Click the Edit menu for that particular space. From that menu, choose Delete week or Delete topic.
